Sometimes you need to look at server logs. Locations are as follows.

Runtime

All the logs are in /var/log and all but one are in /var/log/openathens:

Log fileContainsRetention
/var/log/openathens/login-apache-*This shows details about transfers to resources. These files are indexed by oala-login.idx which in turn supplies data to the Reports > Login page.Once indexed, these files can be archived to save space.
/var/log/openathens/platform-apache-*Provides details about errors and warnings associated with transactions between OpenAthens Runtime and Service Providers. These files are indexed by oala-platform.idx but must still exist to be viewable in the admin console.Older files can be archived or deleted to save space
/var/log/openathens/protocol-apache-*These are protocol logs which are made during each resource access. Should only appear if you've enabled protocol level logging. Can be deleted when no longer needed
/var/log/openathens/oala-category.idxRecords the user categories associated with a login event and is directly written by the system. This data is used by the Summary, Trends and Statistics pages under Reports in the admin console.

Do not delete.

This is populated only by live activities and deleted data cannot be recovered.

/var/log/openathens/oala-login.idxIndexes the login-apache log files. This data is used to efficiently present data on the Reports > Login page in the admin console.

Avoid deletion.

If removed, it will rebuild from available login-apache logs after a restart of the openathensd service.

/var/log/openathens/oala-platform.idxIndexes the platform-apache logs. This data is used to efficiently present data on the Reports > Runtime page in the admin console .

Avoid deletion.

If removed, it will rebuild from available platform-apache logs after a restart of the openathensd service.

/var/log/openathens/login-root-*Logins that have occurred whilst Apache is starting, which is very unlikely. Usually empty. Can be safely deleted
/var/log/openathens/platform-root-*Logs made during the startup of apache by the root user. Useful to debug configuration errors. Can be safely deleted unless you are investigating configuration errors
/var/log/openathens/protocol-root-*Protocol actions occuring whilst Apache is starting, which is very unlikely. Usually empty. Can be safely deleted
/var/log/openathensd.outputGenerated by Ruby and it's content is unlikely to be required. Can be safely deleted periodically

To change the logging level:

This is controlled by the /etc/openathens/atacama/oaLogLA.xml file. For debug level logging, change <level>INFO<level> to <level>DEBUG<level> in the relevant sections. Protocol logging can be enabled by uncommenting the protocol logging section.

In both cases an Apache restart is required to enable the change. These settings can have a massive impact on the size of the log files if your service is live, so revert them when you no longer need the additional detail.

To restart openathensd or Apache:

sudo service openathensd restart

sudo service httpd restart
